Interior designer Susie Kurkowski frequently designs custom closet solutions for her clients and knows exactly how to make a closet fit their specific needs while also fitting into their space.
When designing custom closet spaces, Susie tells her clients more is better. If you have to give up bedroom square footage to expand your closet space so that it fits all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories, including drawers for clothing, it is well worth it, she says. Your bedroom, she advises, should be a sanctuary of sorts, not a dressing room. Contain everything in your closets so you can enjoy a peaceful bedroom that won’t become cluttered with clothes. She makes sure there is a place for everything in the closet when she is customizing them. Susie says that sometimes shrinking the size of a client’s bedroom to make room for a bigger closet is the best gift she can give them in a remodel or redesign.
When working with existing closets, Susie suggests adding a second hanging bar and putting longer dresses and coats in a hall closet to maximize limited closet space. She also tells clients to be vigilant about switching out seasonal items. This time of year, take a day to put all your summer clothes, shoes and accessories in underbed storage to make room for heavier Fall and Winter items in your closet.
One key to keeping closet space and rooms organized is dedicated shoe storage. Shoes are often one of the biggest culprits of messy closets and bedroom spaces so by dedicating places like vertical or under bed storage to shoes, it’s easier to declutter. In a recent home renovation, Susie took a client's auxiliary room and partial home office situated by the front of their house and built a closet into the space to create storage for coats and shoes by the front door. She then brightened the space and made a formerly dark room into a sunny multifunctional home office and playroom.
Whether you are a renter or an owner, Susie helps clients design the perfect space for all of their things - small and large with her custom closets which allow for changes and flexibility over time and arrive in as little as three days. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
